    Happenings: 70th Annual Miss Hospitality

Celebrating its 70th anniversary, Mississippi Miss Hospitality will host its largest competition in more than a decade, welcoming 44 contestants to Hattiesburg in July.

This year’s program features not only the contestants but their Little Misses and former state Miss Hospitalities as well. The Platinum Jubilee competition will take place at 8 p.m. July 26 and 27 at the Saenger Theater in downtown Hattiesburg.

Hobos, Heroes, and Street Corner Clowns

The Shop Downtown is one of those mythical places you usually only hear stories about. Equal parts dive bar and bohemian art market, the small, disheveled 800-square-foot oasis in downtown Hattiesburg first opened its doors in the early 2000s as The Grill and Grocery and was resurrected in 2014 with a new owner and a new name.

Friends Reunite: Fairley's Wings and More

Reunited… and it feels sooooo good
After a multi-month hiatus, the Food with Friends crew has finally teamed up once again to do what we do best – eat and chat. This month’s adventure brings us to Fairley’s Wings and More in Downtown Hattiesburg. We were excited to get the gang back together and enjoy a spread from the local wing joint. Jamie even showed up in his “I Am Fairley’s Wings” T-shirt that he got at the ribbon cutting when the business first opened its doors.

  • A city on the Mississippi River, New Orleans has opened its loving arms to a variety of cultures, languages, cuisine, and lifestyles, carefully spreading all of these ingredients into the bouillabaisse that preserves their joie d'vivre. We lost one of the great ambassadors of New Orleans music and culture in Mac Rebennack, a/k/a Dr. John, The Night Tripper. Crowds as far as the camera eye could see gathered together to walk with his spirit just one more time after news spread of his passing at 77.

    Signature Q&A: Frank Caliendo

FRANK CALIENDO, 45, is returning to the Hub City a second time for this year’s Laughs4Life fundraising event Aug. 2 at The Saenger Theater. A comedian, actor, and impressionist, Caliendo has been making people laugh his entire life. He is well known for his impressions of famous personal-ities – Donald Trump, Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino and Robin Williams, to name a few. On stage, his high energy act is a blend of observations, impressions, characters and anecdotal stories that start at a frenetic pace and never let up.

  • Meet Chris Cook

Chris Cook is a cut above the competition as his barber shop, JC Cook Barber Shop, sheared the competition for Best Barber Shop in 2019 Best of the Pine Belt voting.

Cook, 40, came by his profession honestly. As the shop’s Facebook page proudly proclaims, “the Cook name has been synonymous with barbering in the Pine Belt since the 1940s. I'm proud to carry on the family tradition in my shop since 2005.”

    SIERRA NEVADA SIERRAVEZA

In the summer, the most important thing when it comes to beer is hydration. Mississippi-legal beer can be no less than 89.8 percent WBV (water by volume), so the odds are good that almost any beer you drink will help you stay hydrated, generally. But on these dog days of summer, nothing goes better with yard work than a lager. And so, for July, we offer you Sierra Nevada Sierraveza.
