The University of Southern Mississippi is excited to announce the return of Southern Arena Theatre (SAT) with not two shows, but three shows this summer.
Last year, as a result of budget cuts at Southern Miss, SAT was forced to close its doors. Thanks to enthusiastic community support and dedicated faculty and staff at the University, one of the Gulf South’s most extraordinarily talented repertory theatre groups is ready for curtains and its 40th season.
When the ARC Showstoppers take the Saenger Theater stage on May 21 there won’t be anyone more proud than ARC director Cindy Pennington.
Thanks to help from the Hattiesburg Arts Council and all who support their efforts throughout the community, Pennington will be able to mark this dream off her bucket list. Through their many and varied programs, the Arc promotes and encourages the acceptance of those with mental disabilities by exposure to and interaction with people in the community.
Fairy tales will collide, combine and potentially collude as Hattiesburg Civic Light Opera presents its spring 2016 show, Into The Woods. With songs by legendary composer Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, the musical intertwines elements and characters from Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Rapunzel and other classic stories into a mesmerizing and comedic stage interpretation of these beloved tales. Celebrated Hattiesburg filmmaker and actor Miles Doleac directs. The music is directed by Dr. Michael Miles.
