Signature Q&A: Ginger Maddox Lowrey

GINGER MADDOX LOWREY, 32, a proud Southern Miss alum who majored in Geography and minored in Sociology, originally hails from the Delta. After living in New Orleans while earning her masters in Urban and Regional Planning, she moved back to Hattiesburg for her job as an Urban Planner for the City of Hattiesburg in 2013. She lives downtown with her husband, Shawn, dog, Boggie, and two cats, Sanchez and Morty. She enjoys her daily commute, a two-block walk to City Hall.

What is your idea of happiness?
Endless Saturdays filled with a mix of day trips, good food, board games and friends. 

What is your greatest fear?
Being the center of attention. (Thanks Signature for making me face it!) 

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Fear, which is really the only thing that could keep me from achieving my goals.

What is your most prized possession?
My iPhone is in my hand more than anything else, so anything else feels like a lie.

Which talent would you most like to have?
To play the piano.

Clever, high energy humor 

Who is your favorite fictional hero?
Gia from the YA series Fearless. She lacked the gene for fear and I thought that was a clever superpower. 

What is your idea of misery?

What was the worst day of your life?
The first time I ever moved completely by myself in New Orleans. It was from Uptown to the Lower Garden District in July and it rained about a foot. Boxes were dropped and furniture slipped. It was truly miserable but I learned the power of independence. 

What was the happiest day of your life?
My wedding day. It may be cliche, but it was fun and truthful and right outside my front door on Front Street.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? 
I grew up working in my family’s general store before and after school every day in the Delta from the age of 9.  

What is your greatest regret?
Not playing a team sport in grade school. 

What is your motto?
I’m a Golden Rule kinda girl. 

Besides the Pine Belt, where is your favorite place to be?
Iceland, my honeymoon destination. It’s the most otherworldly place I’ve ever been. New Orleans is a close second though, especially since I can actually drive there.

If you could have dinner with anyone – dead or alive – who would it be?
My maternal grandparents, Wolf and Patsy Hellmers, when they were my age.    

What would you eat for your last meal?
Fried dumplings with extra dumpling sauce from Panda, a cookie from Depot Kitchen, and one of Grin’s cereal lattes. 

What is your present state of mind?
Progress through a balance of rebirth and new growth.

What words would people use to describe you?
My friends who play D&D would say I’m Lawful Good. Others would say loyal, and hopefully funny.
