MYSTIC KREWE OF ZEUS: CROWNING THE NEW KING & QUEEN

In February, the Mystic Krewe of Zeus gathered at the Saenger Theater to crown its new monarchs.

DR. ALAN DOUGLAS LUCAS
ZEUS LXXIX

Lucas is a native of Hattiesburg. As a youth, he was active in the Boy Scouts obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout.  He attended Hattiesburg High School, where he lettered in cross country and track and field.

He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in biology. A Dean's List Scholar, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, where he held the offices of Rush Chairman, vice-president and president. He was a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta, Order of Omega, Pi Tau Chi, Inter-Fraternity Council Judicial Board, Omicron Delta Kappa, Rotaract, Southern Style and served as President and Junior Advisor of Lambda Sigma. He was voted Mr. USM.

Lucas received his dental training at the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry in Jackson, graduating with a Doctor of Medical Dentistry degree in 1989. While in dental school, he served as president of his senior class and was awarded the Academy of General Dentistry Award. After graduation, he completed a General Practice Residency at the UMMC in Jackson.

He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists where he has served as section president. He is a member of the American Dental Association and serves as trustee for District 3 of the Mississippi Dental Association. He is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the South Mississippi Dental Society. 

In 1989, he and his wife, Melinda, founded Oak Grove Family Dentistry where they practice today. They, with Dr. Zach Crawford, look forward to the addition of the Lucas  daughters upon their graduation from the UMMC School of Dentistry. 

His clinic works with the Edwards Street Mission in Hattiesburg providing dental services. Lucas has served on the Medical Dental Mission team to Honduras for many years. He also serves the University of Southern Mississippi Athletic Department as a team dentist.  

Lucas is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Aubrey Keith Lucas of Hattiesburg. He is married to Dr. Melinda Gray Lucas and they are the parents of Meredith Gray Lucas and Elizabeth Anne Lucas.  He is a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.

Dr. Lucas became a member of the Mystic Krewe of Zeus in 1984 by serving as a Duke of the Royal Court of Zeus XLIV H. David Roberts, and his Queen Patricia Lynn Ross. He served as Grand Marshal to the Queen of Zeus LXI Col. Joseph Dwight Dyess, Queen Lauren Hood Shifalo, and has served as a Royal Captain of the Krewe for many years. His daughter, Meredith, was a Maid in the Royal Court of Zeus LXXIV, Dr. Thomas Stockton Messer, Jr., and his daughter, Elizabeth, was a Maid in the Royal Court of Zeus LXXVI, Francis Ross Bell. 

JENNIFER HOLLEMAN ST. JOHN
QUEEN TO  KING ZEUS LXXIX

The Queen of the Mystic Krewe of Zeus, Jennifer Holleman St. John, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert White St. John of Hattiesburg. Her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Alan Johnson of Seminary, Nila Parish Johnson of Minden, Louisiana, and Virginia White St. John of Hattiesburg. Her Majesty's brother is Thomas Harrison St. John, also of Hattiesburg.

Her Majesty graduated from Presbyterian Christian High School in Hattiesburg, where she was a varsity cheerleader. While in high school, the Queen founded Kid Cash, a charity that provides school supplies for underprivileged children.

St. John, a senior at Mississippi State University, is majoring in psychology with an emphasis in child psychology.  She plans to pursue a Master's degree in child psychology specializing in assisted behavior analysis therapy.  At MSU, she is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

The Queen is past resident of the Hattiesburg Debutante Association and is a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. 

Her father reigned as Zeus LXX. Her cousin, Janice Mayson Longino was the Queen to Zeus I, B. D. Moore, and her cousin, Mitzi Wheless was the Queen to Zeus XVIII, William T. Russell, Sr.

The Queen has participated in numerous Mystic Krewe of Zeus Coronations.  She was a Royal Jewel Bearer to Susan Grace Roberts Olmsted, the Queen to Zeus LXIX, Dr. Steven Moreau Murphey.  She was a Lady-in-Waiting to Annie Laurie Roberts Barrett, the Queen to Zeus LXXI, Warren Alton Hood, Jr.  She was a Royal Page to Sarah Halliwell Carver, the Queen to Zeus LXIV, William Holt McMullan and a Royal Page to Hollis Heidelberg Giddens, the Queen to Zeus LXV, Lawrence Wayne Warren.  She appeared in the Prologue of the Coronations of Zeus LXVII, Ted Johnson Webb, Jr., Zeus LXVIII, Frank Hoyle McWhorter, Jr., Zeus LXX, Robert White St. John, and Zeus LXXIII, Dr. Timothy Leigh Cole.

The Queen's escort for the weekend's festivities was John David Polles, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Sam Polles, III of Hattiesburg.

 

MAIDS & DUKES

Dukes and Maids for the Mystic Krewe of Zeus were introduced during the Coronation for their new king and queen held at the Saenger Theater.

MAIDS OF THE COURT

1. Madeleine Webb Bell is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Homer Bell III. She is a kinesiology major at The University of Southern Mississippi. At USM, she is a 4-year member of the cross country team and the 2018 Women’s Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field championship team. She is a member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and a recipient of the United States Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award. She is a member of Venture Church. Her uncle, Francis Ross Bell, served as Zeus 76. Her cousins who served as Royalty are Patricia Lynn Ross, Queen to Zeus 44 H. David Roberts; Thad L. Fowler, Zeus 11; T. Louis Fowler, Zeus 32; Sally Ross Fowler Carson, Queen to Zeus 42 Dr. John Pettis Culpepper III; and Mary Ross Daniels, Queen to Zeus 12, C. Caruthers Sullivan. She was escorted by her father.  

2. Margaret Lacey Campbell, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joe Hand Campbell Jr., is a graduate of the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Biological Sciences. While at Ole Miss, she was a member of Tri Delta Sorority, a University Lab grant editor and a student laboratory technician. She has received a research position at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She is a member of Main Street United Meth-odist Church. She was escorted by her father.  

3. Olivia Leigh Cole is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Timothy Leigh Cole. She is majoring in Marine Science at The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus. She is a USM honor student and volunteer for Aldersgate Mission. She was awarded a research position with the field school and University of Miami to conduct shark research. She is a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.  Her father served as Zeus 73 and escorted her.

4. Maria Hope Enger, an English major and physics minor at Louisiana State University, is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Eric Wiggins Enger. She is a member of the 2019 Mortar Board Class, a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and a LSU ASPIRE research scholar. She attends St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. She was escorted by her father.

5. Meredith Grace Enger is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Eric Wiggins Enger.  She is a journalism major at the University of Mississippi. At Ole Miss, she is a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, where she served on the Preference and Risk Management committee, a Chancellor and Dean’s List Scholar and interned for the Mississippi Main Street Association. She is a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. She was escorted by her father.  

6. Maria Gabrielle Rahaim Graham, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Richard Graham II, is a journalism major at The University of Southern Mississippi. At USM, she is a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority where she serves as New Member coordinator.  She is a Dean’s List Scholar and a Luckyday Citizenship Scholar where she serves on the Leadership Team and the Selection Committee. She is a member of St. Fabian Catholic Church. She was escorted by her father.

7. Brooke Bartlett Haddad is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jon Bartlett Haddad. She is a nursing major at The University of Southern Mississippi, where she is a member of Phi Mu Sorority and is a President and Dean’s List Scholar. She attends Oak Grove United Methodist Church. She was escorted by her father.

8. Catherine O’Hara McClain, a psychology major at the University of Alabama, is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lacy Carr McClain. At Alabama, she is a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority, director of research for the university and a member of the Sigma Alpha Pi National Honor Society. She is a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. She was escorted by her father.

9. Sarah Elizabeth McClain is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lacy Carr McClain. She is a psychology major at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. At UNC, she is a Dean’s List Scholar, member of Psi Chi Honor Society and an out-of-state student association mentor.   She was escorted by her father.

10. Aubrey Louise Upton, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Layne Rogers Upton, is working on a double major in Spanish and business administration with an emphasis in marketing at Mississippi State University.  At MSU, she is a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, the International Business Society and Undergraduate Women in Business. She attends Venture Church and was escorted by her father.

11. Ann Louise Whitehead is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Young Whitehead. She is a nursing major at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and the Society for Collegiate Leadership and Achievement. She is a volunteer with Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp and attends St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.  She was escorted by her father.

 

DUKES OF THE COURT

12. Preston Brooks Alston is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gregory James Alston. He is a business management major at the University of Mississippi. At Ole Miss, he is a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, the Ole Miss Cardinal Club and the Society of Collegiate Leadership and Achievement.  He is a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

13. Brooks Curry Bigelow, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Todd Alan Bigelow, is a banking and finance major at the University of Mississippi.  At Ole Miss, he is a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, a Chancellor and Dean’s List Scholar and a Provost Scholar. He attends St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. 

14. Tyler Austin Flathau, a biology major at the University of Southern Mississippi, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Sherrard Flathau. At USM, he is a member of the Golden Eagle football team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and on the Conference USA Commissioners Honor Roll. He attends Main Street United Methodist Church.

15. Richard Howard Hunter IV is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Howard Hunter III. He has an Associate’s Degree in applied science in electronics technology from Jones County Junior College and attends the University of Southern Mississippi. His cousin, Christina Penn Rutland, was Queen to Zeus 77, Dennis Gregory Garraway. At USM, he is a member of United Way, has helped with the Senior Citizens Health Fair and the Homeless Connect Event for the City of Hattiesburg. He is a member of Venture Church.

16. Jackson Bensel Klein, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Henry Klein III, is a forensic science major at the University of Mississippi. He spent a semester working the mountain at Big Sky Resort in Montana and also spent time during the summer in Poland, the Netherlands and Belgium. He is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  

17. Chandler Nathan Laudenheimer is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gene Freeman Jr. and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Davidson Laudenheimer. He is an accounting and finance major at the University of Southern Mississippi. At USM, he is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Beta Alpha Psi and on the Dean’s List. He attends Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

18. Drew Patrick Melancon, a biology and pre-med major at Louisiana Tech University, is the son of Dr. Keith Patrick Melancon and Susan Leggett Melancon. He is an offensive lineman for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, fundraising chair for the Louisiana Tech Chapter of Delta Chi and on the President’s List. He is a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Luling, Louisiana.

19. John David Polles is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Sam Polles III. He is a business and marketing Major at the University of Southern Mississippi. Prior to enrolling at USM, he was on an athletic scholarship to Jones County Junior College as a member of the baseball team. In 2016, he was a member of the National Championship NJCAA baseball team.  He attends Venture Church.

20. Alexander Shemper Schwartz, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Ronald Louis Schwartz, is a candidate to receive a Bachelor of Science degree as well as a Master’s in Public Health at Tulane University. At Tulane, he is a member of the Emergency Medical Services executive board and he is working as Operations Lieutenant. He is a member of the Temple B’Nai Israel. 

21. James David Williford is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Kyle Polk and Mr. and Mrs. James S. Williford Jr. He attends Jones County Junior College pursuing a degree in welding. His mother, Mary Louise Bomboy Polk was queen to Zeus 52, Judge Richard Wayne McKenzie. His grandfather, Dr. David Waldron Bomboy, was Zeus 56. His aunt, Anna Laura Bomboy Brett, was Queen to Zeus 55, Justice Michael Keith Randolph and his aunt, Simeon Avery Williford Klauk, was Queen to Zeus 58, Dr. David Harry Halliwell III. He is an Abbie Rogers Civitan Camp Volunteer. He attends Trinity Episcopal Church.
